Last year, a friend of mine contacted me and asked if I would make her a heart baby quilt. She had just delivered a sweet baby boy, but at birth they discovered he had a congenital heart disease. Within hours he was on life support and had 2 open heart surgeries in the first few weeks of his life. Hence the desire for a heart quilt for him. She sent me some screen shots of what she had in mind and after I saw her vision, I was excited to make this quilt for her.
Once I saw the photos of the color scheme she liked, I zoomed in and noticed that some of the fabrics were dinosaur themed. So I started searching Etsy for dinosaur fabrics in hopes I would find the fabric line they came from - and I did! Most of the fabric in both of the quilts is from the line Roar! by Citrus and Mint Designs for Riley Blake. It was the perfect fabric for this quilt- I loved the idea of tough dinosaurs for this little guy - my friend said he is such a fighter! I was able to find most of the fabrics in the line and I added a few other matching fabrics that I had in my stash.
Next came the tricky part - finding a heart block to use for the quilt. I had never made a pieced heart quilt before, but having seen lots of heart quilts online, I knew that most heart blocks have a seam somewhere inside the heart- often, right down the middle. Since lots of the fabrics I had were stripes, ginghams and dinosaurs I wanted to fussy-cut, I knew those blocks with a seam would not work for me. I checked the block library in EQ8 and on Etsy for a heart block pattern with no seams, but no luck. So I decided to just figure out how to make my own.

Since the center V of a heart is a Y-seam, I started trying to find a good way to make one and discovered that it is super easy! I made a video that's on Instagram or Facebook so you can see how easy!

And this sweet little guy is doing great!
Have so much fun making seamless heart blocks!
